چکیده

As a developing country, protecting groundwater resources is extremely essential in Sri Lanka. Landfills are one of the main sources of water pollution. The filling of the Gohagoda disposal yard, takes place at a distance about 50m from Gohagoda water intake plant. In addition, there is several boreholes located close proximity of the landfill, which used for drinking and domestic purposes. A study of composition of landfill leachate and groundwater pollution conducted at Gohagoda landfill site, which is located at north-west of Kandy city. The Leachate sampled at nine different locations of the landfill. Groundwater samples were collected using auguring at five locations. In addition, to detect the seasonal variation of the water quality in the nearby water wells, four water samples obtained during both wet and dry seasons. Leachate and groundwater were physically and chemically characterized. Parameters measured were pH, Sulphate, Nitrate, Nitrites, Heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Ni, Cr, CO, Fe, Mn, Cu). The results showed that leachate of the landfill were most likely methanogenic phase, based on the alkaline pH value recorded. These results also showed that significant number of borehole were contaminated where concentration of physio-chemical parameters are above the W.H.O standards required for drinking water. Therefore, this landfill is a threat for the environment, and government should do sanitary landfill to prevent further contamination of groundwater as well as soil.

Appropriate Use of MSW Leachate Recycling in Municipal Solid Waste Landfilling1

There is considerable interest today in the so-called “biocell” approach toward municipal solid waste (MSW) landfilling in which leachate is introduced back into the landfill. This approach reduces the cost of leachate management and is said to reduce/eliminate the potential for long term landfill gas production and groundwater pollution. However, a critical review of the typical approach being...

Leachate and Pollution Levels of Heavy Metals in the Groundwater near Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Site of Mashhad, Iran

Background: The purpose of this study is to investigate the concentration of metals (lead, cadmium, chromium, copper, and nickel) in the landfill leachate and heavy metals in wells downstream of municipal solid waste landfill site in the city of Mashhad. Methods: In both winter and summer seasons in 2009 samples were collected from five wells that were in landfill downstream in Mashhad. Resul...

Groundwater Pollution by Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Leachate: A Case Study of Okhla Landfill Delhi

The large number of municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills and the many hazardous materials which they contain pose a serious threat to both surrounding environment and human populations. Once waste is deposited at the landfill, pollution can arise from the percolation of leachate to the porous ground surface. Contamination of groundwater by such leachate renders it and the associated aquifer un...

Leachate characterization and identification of dominant pollutants using leachate pollution index for an uncontrolled landfill site

Landfill leachates are potential threats for environmental degradation. This study was conducted to determine the leachate quality, to identify the dominant pollutants and to evaluate the leachate pollution potential of an active and closed dumping ground of an uncontrolled municipal solid waste landfill site in Kolkata, India using leachate pollution index. The results of the physico-chemical ...

Influence of biological pre-treatment of municipal solid waste on landfill behaviour in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka is an island in the Indian Ocean with an area about 65 610 km(2). The population of the country is around 20.2 million. Hazardous disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) is a major concern particularly in the most urbanized areas of Sri Lanka. However, the current waste management system does not facilitate any waste pre-treatment techniques before final disposal. As a consequence, th...
